Key pieces for a multi-purpose wardrobe

As much as I love investing in fashion-forward pieces, working full-time in an office means I have to be practical with my sartorial purchases as well (you know, ’cause of that pesky little thing called money!) Over the years I’ve learnt that there’s certain items that can be styled for both work and leisure, so I tend to build my wardrobe around those as I know I’ll well and truly get my wear out of them. Here are my key pieces for the 9 to 5 and beyond:

White shirt

Honestly, the simple white shirt is one of my favourite wardrobe staples – I’ve even documented my love for it before along with ways to style it here. No matter what the style – fitted, oversized, boyfriend, sleeveless – the white shirt can easily be styled for work and play. I love throwing it over jeans or leather pants for a no fuss look just as much as I love pairing it with a blazer for work.

Dark skinnies

No wardrobe would be complete without a pair of dark skinnies. These babies can be worn with a shirt and a blazer for a more casual yet still work appropriate look, or with a tee and sneakers for the perfect weekend look.

Cape blazer

The cape blazer is truly a chameleon. I’ve styled it with a crisp white shirt (of course!) and black trousers for work, but have also paired it with a white tee for a more relaxed look. I think it would look great with a lighter wash jean as well (now to just find the perfect pair…)

Finally, the humble boot. I own so many pairs of boots but I don’t plan to stop anytime soon! They are my go-to shoe in any season because they are perfect for any occasion; they’re just as wearable with a cropped trouser or a skirt for work in winter as they are with a flowy dress for leisure in summer. And there’s so many styles: embellished, heeled, ankle cut, statement… The only question is which to buy next!
