Penny Lane Clothing Exchange

Located on Brunswick’s bustling Sydney Road, Penny Lane Clothing Exchange is not your average second hand store. While customers have the choice to sell their pre-loved clothes for cash in hand or store credit* (or simply go in and shop for something new!) it’s not a consignment store, which means no more waiting for your pieces to be sold before seeing your precious cash or credit!

I was kindly invited by owner Peta Stephenson to visit the store recently. The first thing I noticed (aside from the scandi-meets-vintage interior) was that everything on the racks was instantly wearable, which I soon learned was a purposeful point of difference for the store – Peta only accepts clothing within the current season, so no more searching through copious amounts of coats when all you really want is the perfect summer dress to wear the next day. Nor does she accept ‘fast fashion’ such as H&M because let’s face it, when you can pick that stuff up for around 20 dollars why would you want to see it at a clothing exchange store?

Peta’s background also sets her store apart. A former academic turned qualified image and style consultant, Peta offers styling advice and one-on-one personal styling sessions so that customers can better understand and shop for their body type.

On the day I went in, Peta was on hand to suggest pieces, help me with questions, and workshop how I might alter a dress that was just that bit too big.

In the end, I went for these summery white knee-length shorts which have enough texture to elevate them from simple to second glance, but are classic enough to style with almost anything. (Sidenote – on looking through the candid photos taken by le` husband, it became glaringly obvious that I have a thing with pockets. I couldn’t strike a pose in the mirror without having my hands in them!).  I wore these babies out for a dinner date recently with a black ruffled top and summer sandals for maximum effortlessness.

Wearing: Shorts from Penny Lane Clothing Exchange; Manning Cartell top; The Daily Edited clutch; Wittner Nikolai wedge.

Penny Lane Clothing Exchange is well worth a visit (even if you’re Southside like me!) to pick up some great pieces on a budget or cull your wardrobe.
