Alternatives to the Little Black Dress

There’s no denying that the Little Black dress is a wardrobe staple – and with good reason. It can be the epitome of style, the perfect blank canvas that lets accessories shine, or the savior during those ‘I-have-nothing-to-wear’ moments. But while the LBD is a key addition to any wardrobe, sometimes it needs a much deserved break. Here are a few of my favourite alternatives:

As easy to throw on as the LBD (although not as easy to go to the bathroom depending on the style!), a black jumpsuit can leave you feeling instantly cool and a touch more edgy than its little black dress counterpart. They’re also surprisingly versatile; while a slim-fit jumpsuit is perfect for a night out, simply adding a shirt underneath can transform them into workwear territory.

As a self-confessed lover of separates, I’m delighted that culottes are seriously ‘in’. I love how they can look floaty and feminine in much the same way as a dress or a skirt, yet somehow seem to retain the chic structure of a pant. I pair my black Lover culottes with a black top for a look that’s reminiscent of the LBD, but with a twist.

Trouser suit

Finally, a black trouser suit can offer a sophisticated yet sexy take on the classic LBD. No longer confined to work, celebrities, style icons and bloggers alike have shown that a well-cut trouser suit can make a serious style statement, especially when paired with a slinky cami for a hint of decolletage.

I hope these alternatives inspire you give your LBD a break!
