Hungry for more at White Mojo

Having frequented White Mojo’s city cafe in Hardware Street a few times now (you might remember these waffles or this hot chocolate), I was beyond thrilled to receive an invite to try their newest opening in Balwyn!

While the aesthetics of the two cafes are similar with marble tiles lining both the walls and the countertops in an on-trend hexagon motif, patrons of the Balwyn location are greeted by an impressive pop art-style mural of a French bulldog splashed opposite the entrance. Given my fondness (read: obsession) with dogs, this piece made me feel instantly enamoured.

We started our meals by ordering drinks, and I couldn’t go past the matcha latte. Known for their quirky latte art, I asked for my design to be a surprise – and boy did the barista deliver! My matcha latte was an intricate design that was almost too pretty to drink, but I’m glad I did because it also tasted amazing (think frothy and creamy with the perfect sweet to bitter ratio). The husband was so impressed that he even ordered one for himself as well.

For our mains, I ordered the French toast with coffee parfait, honeycomb, chocolate ganache and salted caramel and the husband ordered the soft shell crab croissant burger, both of which are counted as two of the cafes signature dishes. We also dined with friends who ordered the smashed sweet potato and smoked salmon, but I decided to let them eat their food while it was still hot without waiting for me to take a photo (the poor husband doesn’t receive such luxuries!).

My French toast was delicious, but was definitely not for the faint hearted or the high in blood sugar! The French toast itself was soft but with a hint of crispiness and the accompaniments complemented the toast perfectly. I did have a little trouble finishing it though as it was quite sweet, but the husband very happily finished off the last few pieces. I would recommend either sharing this dish between friends at the end of a meal, as while it was sweet, it was still light.

The stand out of the day was by far the croissant burger. The soft shell crab sat perfectly in a bed of fried egg, pickled cucumber and smoked eel, and the croissant itself was light and fluffy without being greasy. The chipotle mayonnaise on the side of the plate finished off the dish perfectly. I am already planning to go there soon so I can have my own rather than just a few sneaky bites! We finished the meal off by sharing a vanilla and choc-matcha cronut, both of which were delicious.

With a few slight menu variations but that same Scandi-meets-Insta-worthy aesthetic, White Mojo in Balwyn is like the slightly more playful younger sister of its Hardware Street counterpart and is definitely worth a visit.
