The great white shirt

When I think about my wardrobe staples, one of the first pieces that comes to mind is the classic button-down white shirt. While other trends come and go, the versatility of the white shirt means that it can be worn for any occasion and during any season. And when styled right, it can truly be the proverbial life-saver when you feel like you have nothing to wear (which for me seems like every second day!). Here are my top three ways to style a white shirt.

1. Denim

One of the easiest ways to style a white shirt is with denim. When pairing a white shirt with jeans, a shirt with a loose fit that’s still slightly structured can create a laid back, tailored look that’s perfect for the weekend (or even the office on casual Friday!). I like to elevate this simple look with the addition of a statement piece – in this instance with my black and rose gold Alexander Wang Marion bag.

2. Oversized androgyny

As much as I love the tailored look that can be created by a structured white shirt, I love its polar opposite – the super relaxed I-just-rolled-out-of -bed look – just as much. When paired with a loose fit pant like boyfriend jeans, an over-sized white shirt is the perfect way to achieve an androgynous style that’s laid back and relaxed. As a bonus, an oversized white shirt can also be paired with other pieces, such as a a tapered pant or a midi skirt to create a more feminine take on oversized androgyny.

3. Corporate chic

Lastly, it goes without saying that the white shirt is a serious work essential. From suit pants to high-waisted pencil skirts, the white shirt can be worn with a range of pieces for work and is an easy go-to when you’re rushed or feeling inspired. Finished off with a blazer, it’s an easy way to achieve that corporate chic look. When choosing a shirt for work, look for slim, tailored cuts that fit well under blazers.IMG_9794

There’s so many different looks that can be created with the help of the classic button-down white shirt; it really is the easiest and most versatile wardrobe essential to style. I recommend investing in a few different styles to make sure you have the perfect shirt to finish your look!
