Make-up must-haves

I am a self-confessed make-up amateur. I don’t follow the latest trends, I’m not addicted to any one brand, and I don’t wear make up on a daily basis (well not heavy make-up, a little mascara and lipstick doesn’t count!). But I have tried enough make up products to know what I like and when I’m onto a good thing, I’m a repeat offender! Here’s my tried-and-tested favourites that I replenished at my recent visit to Mecca Maxima.

Bobby Brown Art stick (pictured below in Harlow Read and Dusty Pink; $44)

If you are looking for a lipstick or pencil that is long last, feels super soft, has a lovely matte finish, and is ridiculously easy to apply, then you must try these art sticks. Stat. I’ve found the colours last all day with maybe one or two additional applications, and they don’t leave my lips feeling sticky. These can be used as either a lip pencil or a lipstick, but I find that the colour and coverage is perfect enough without needing anything else over the top. The only drawback is that they don’t come in more colours! (There’s currently six colours available).

Mecca Cosmetica Line & prime artistry lip perfector ($38)

I don’t even know where to start about this product, it has seriously changed my life (no, really). It is a two-in-one lip liner and primer, and while the lip liner is impressive (apply it before the primer to help prevent colour bleeding over the lip line), is it the primer that really shines. I am quite extremely prone to dry lips which used to prevent me from wearing lipstick as my lips would instantly chap and the lipstick would look terrible. I tried so many products to alleviate this (balms, ointments, chapsticks…) and nothing worked. Except this. The primer leaves your lips seriously soft and not only helps lipstick application by smoothing the surface of the lip area, but also helps the colour stay on longer. Oh, and did I mention how soft your lips are after using it? So soft that I often just use it as a lip moisturiser even when I’m not wearing lipstick!

NARS Larger than life long-wear eyeliner ($35)

I’ve always struggled with finding the perfect eyeliner. While most pencils I’ve tried were difficult to apply and harsh on my eyes and eyelids, most liquids – although easier to apply – created a look that I didn’t always necessarily want (like a cat-eye). Enter the NARS Larger than life long-wear eyeliner. Not your traditional pencil, this eyeliner is more like a crayon that glides over your eyelid so easily that even rookies such as me can apply it in a few minutes! It is ridiculously long-wearing and smudge proof, and provides a creamy finish. Available in 12 colours.
